Click some of the options below, and get grilling!

Green Summer Gourmet: The Salads

“There’s no question that when you invited friends and family over for a barbeque, the grilled items are the star attractions. But honestly, every star needs a good supporting cast, and that’s where salads come in. When I’m planning a party, I decide on the main course and then choose salads that will work best with that dish. The salad choices are endless which in one way is fabulous, but it can also be daunting. What kind of salad do you choose? What moves it from the realm of the ordinary to the “must have that recipe” category?” (Kelly Rossiter, Planet Green)

Green Summer Gourmet: The Cocktails

“When you have group of friends coming over for an afternoon in the sun and you have your grill ready and your salads prepared, you can have some delicious organic wines to serve with the meal, but it’s fun to get the party started with some organic cocktails. People laugh when I say that the only things in my freezer are a bottle of gin and martini glasses, because they think I’m kidding. Well, I’m not and I take my cocktails seriously, so I took up the challenge for Planet Green…” (Kelly Rossiter, Planet Green)

I hope you’ve Enjoyed this in-depth article, and you’ve used and found what you needed. Please let me know if how it turns out, how you did, or what you decided to do for your Rockstar Labor Day BBQ. I look forward to reading about it.

  1. For barbeque-ing, my absolute favorite side dish is just plain ol’ really good ripe watermelon, with a light sprinkle of sea salt on it. The salt doesn’t come out in the flavor as salty, but it does bring out all the sweetness. It’s simply delicious, and compliments ribs and such wonderfully.

Another favorite: marinated corn, tossed on the grill. See my recipe here if you like. It’s at the bottom of the post.

  2. This site is now bookmarked in my favorites – I’m trying the Raspberry, Blueberry, Strawberry Fruit Drink this weekend. Sounds great!

  3. Amazing post! I have to make sure that my dad reads this.

Thanks for adding the “green” twists.

  4. Wow this is great. I may have to put some of these recipes to use….the skewers sound delish and oh-so-much-better than my Wendy’s Broccoli and Cheese potato. Ha!

  5. there are some great recipes here. most i haven’t tried, but have probably seen on food network…sad i know. it’s great how there are so many recipes you can grill, even desserts. in addition to those listed here’s some others you might want to list:
ina’s fresh corn salad (simple and delicious)
michael chiarello’s roasted banana boats, you could even modify this one and use you’re favorite candy bar and different types of marshmellows (i love coconut covered ones).

  6. Liking the look of some of the chopped salads there — those can be tricky to pull off ‘aesthetically,’ which sounds weird but I’ve noticed there’s a difference between simply chopping stuff up and tossing it and finding out a way to arrange a bit. It’s all in the visuals rather than the taste, but there are great rewards!

  7. omg. my mouth is watering and i don’t even eat meat. (i hardly made it past the fruity beverages before having to wipe the drool off my face). Is looking at pictures of food the same as having a cookout? Because that’s as close as i’m going to get this year. 🙂

  8. That is a definite far cry from semi-burnt chicken wings drowned in ketchup that the Brits seem so fond of here!

  9. Hey aimgrrl, yeah I’ve noticed that too, some fruits taste good with a little sprinkle of salt (berries fall into this category), they balance each other well. The main recipe (mushroom rice…) sounds good, but the corn, I agree sounds awesome. That’s a great combo, and something I probably wouldn’t have thought off (and I’ve had my share of spicy food, and love spicy food too). Thanks, I will definitely give it a try.

lsbmusings, thanks for the bookmark…I hope you find more interesting and useful things to read & comment about in your future visits back. That’s great! Let me know how it turns out, I know when I did it, it turned out good (though I used a little less ice-cubes, about 1/2 cup, because I didn’t want it too thick)… 😆

  10. Hey Melissa, thanks for the comments/compliments…I’m sure your dad will find some very useful BBQ tips in there. And…what’s a “Tips” post without some “green” elements. 😛

catscully, that’s the idea. 😀 , Lemme know which ones you use and how they turn out for you/friends. The shrimp skewer is mouth-watering good (my aunt and her son-in-law made it Saturday).

Ava V, yeah I know DIY’s stable of Networks (HGTV, Food Network, etc), really turn out some good shows…there’s A LOT of more recipes available, I had to trim out some from a lot more sources just to get the post more manageable. lol

Ned, yeah presentation is key, but it’s definitely not easy (but, these guys/ladies are pros and try to make us pros too).

One thing I noticed with chopping versus tossing, is a loss of more internal water in the vegetables used for the salads (if they’re raw and water-filled veggies).

  11. erinlynnparker, lol, glad you enjoy the article…and yeah, sure it is. Just don’t try to put some seasonings on your screen after an hour or two…lol But, seriously, check the Prep/Cook Times of a lot of the posted Recipes, there under 30-Minutes…You can start ’em, watch a show, and finish ’em.

Muks, Hey man how’s going on the other side of the pond? Nothing wrong with a little wings-n-sauce now and then… 😆

  12. Well you definitely come off like a rock star with this post. I think my favorites are the flatbread and the twice grilled peppers. I look forward to trying these out — enjoy your holiday!

  13. awesome looking blog! i can’t wait to try out some of these great recipes. l’ve added you to my blogroll. Happy Labor day!

  14. Hey Insomnisnack, thanks for stopping by, and thank you for the compliments, I really appreciate it 😆 . It’s great that you found some recipes you really digg and that you will give ’em a try. Let us know how they turned out for you.

When I started this post days ago, I made sure when I finished it, that it would be useful for people looking for one last hurrah while Barbecue/Grilling with their friends and family for Summer 2008. Have a great holiday as well!

Hey Jennifer, thanks for stopping by and commenting, I’m glad you like the blog. Thanks for the blogroll add as well, I look forward to future interactions between our two blogs. I’m also glad you found some interesting recipes to try, let us know which ones you used and how they turned out for you…have a Rockstar Labor Day, and enjoy! 😀

  15. Not when it is Tesco’s “BBQ from frozen” wings including the complementary bits of feather… 🙂 Besides, it has been as damp as a gym sock on this side of the pond.

  16. Great way to end the summer! Awesome post, I can’t wait to try some of the recipes, we’ve been looking for a good Sangria recipe, let you know how it turns out. Also, loved the article on Planet green on how to decide whether to use charcoal or gas, I was suprised that “gas” was better. I’ll be firing up mine today, since it’s finally not raining. Thanks, hope your holiday was filled with friends, food, and drink.

  17. Muks, So I see you guys have your version of “Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles” over there… 😆 My Aunt & Uncle live in Edinburgh, she said it was hot/muggy over there too, that true?

Hey Brittany, Glad to hear to hear you like the article, but I’m more glad to hear that you found some stuff that’s specifically useful and you plan to use. I’m very happy that so many people have been able to use this post to help them this Labor Day weekend, and for other events they may have. Yeah, it’s great how the little things can help you have a great yet eco-friendly BBQ…

I’m glad people are enjoying the green-twists, and when I can, I’ll plan to continue integrating “green” options alongside mainstream ones in future articles.

Thanks, and yeah it was good…had two BBQs to attend, both of which were well done by my other family members. Hope yours was great too…that gas grill really gives it a different taste with your grilled foods.

  18. Wow drcorner, this is awesome. I like your blog. I will visit it again.

I can’t wait to try the simple yet delicious fruit drink. Just blend, so easy pitsy. Thanks for commenting in my blog. I agree when it comes to health, there’s always a substitute. I prefer herbs than seasoning. Yes the health choice is ours. Here’s to health. Cheers.

  19. Labor Day may be over, but these good ideas will just keep on givin’…Now, which to try first?

  20. Hey Ramble, thanks for the visits and compliments. I look forward to your future visits. I’m glad you found a recipe you like, hope it turns out good for you. A lot of the choices here offer natural herb-seasonings, and here’s to a better tomorrow as well. 😀

Trisha, how’s it going? I’m really happy you could find stuff you’ll be able to use not just for the holiday, but beyond (which I’m also glad to see many others have too). Let us know how they turn out.

  21. What is it about Rachel Ray – that girl could cook a fence post and I would want to eat it!

  22. 😆 , Probably the ‘under-30 Minutes’ factor… 😀
