8-Year-Old Guitar Prodigy Banned

Strings Have Been Clipped?

It’s terrible these days when a rising star can be suppressed because he’s talented. 8-year-old Tallan “T-Man” Latz has played alongside legends Les Paul and Jackson Browne, but in the state of Wisconsin he can no longer play the clubs where so many stars are born.

After seeing Joe Satriani play, Tallan learned at age 5 what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He spent many hours learning his craft, and three years later it started to pay off with a summer’s worth of festivals booked. He’s even drawn interest from locales around the world.

Someone sent an anonymous email to state officials complaining that Tallan was too young to perform in clubs, even going as far as sending a threatening one to his agent. This isn’t a big music celeb we’re talking about, it’s an 8-year-old, does he deserve this kind of treatment? He’s doing something he loves.

Tallan, who’s father is his Manager, recieved the letter from the State. It carries fines of $25 to $1,000 for employers and from $10 to $250 for parents for every day he performs. He can still play festivals. Sharon Pomaville recieved a threatening letter to stop booking him gigs, which she decided not to pursue.

What a way to twist the child labor laws to get a talented kid off the beat. But, this kid isn’t only talented, he’s got the moxy to boot. When his father Carl Latz told him about the letter, Tallan responded with “It’s not how many times you get knocked down but it’s how many times you get back up and go forward”. 1. Maybe I already mentioned this, but Bob Rivers did a great story on this on the radio, if you’re interested you can listen to the podcast at http://www.bobrivers.com. Be warned these guys can be a little crazy, but always very interesting discussions from 6-10 each morning. This kid is pretty cool!

  2. Hey brittany, yeah the story has generated a lot of buzz in the media world. No you didn’t mention it before, I’ll be sure and check out the podcast.

Don’t worry we have our fair-share of crazy hosts here too, so we’re used to it. Yeah, and he’s self-taught too, at age 5! He can still play festivals though while his dad and agent try and appeal.

  3. wow. what a talented kid and wise for the tender age of 8!

  4. Hey savoredlife, thanks for the visit and comments. Yeah, dude can really rock-out, but it’s a shame bureaucratic and jealous artists can combine to limit him…. 😦
