Microsoft Breaks ZoneAlarm?!?!

Patch Away…

The good ole’ boys at Microsoft released a new “patch” on Tuesday. The “patch” was supposed to fix a potential DNS vulnerability, but instead it brought down ZoneAlarm users who used Windows XP.

On July 9th, 2008 Microsoft issued update KB951748, which was supposed to fix a Known DNS security issue that would potentially allow attackers to redirect Internet requests to sites that engage in phishing or malware distribution. The main problem arose when suddenly tons of ZoneAlarm users who use Windows XP lost internet access. Details are below on who it effects, and potential workarounds and fixes.

Platforms Impacted:

Windows XP, ZoneAlarm Free, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite

Effect:

Sudden loss of internet access

Solutions:

Option 1: Move Internet Zone slider to Medium

  1. Navigate to the “ZoneAlarm Firewall” panel
  2. Click on the “Firewall” tab
  3. Move the “Internet Zone” slider to medium

Option 2: Uninstall the hotfix

  1. Click the “Start Menu”
  2. Click “Control Panel”, or click “Settings” then “Control Panel”
  3. Click on “Add or Remove Programs”
  4. On the top of the add/remove programs dialog box, you should see a checkbox
that says “show updates”. Select this checkbox
  5. Scroll down until you see “Security update for Windows (KB951748)”
  6. Click “Remove” to uninstall the hotfix

Any more additional info regarding this “fix” from our good friends in Redmond (go Microsoft!) can be found at ZoneAlarm’s website.

  2. I first thought so too, but that’s them ending out a request to check for updates (not the actual updates). This issue though was caused by Microsoft, not Zonealarm (what a surprise there, Microsoft breaks something 😆 ). No prob, thanks for the visit as well, look forward to many more convo’s here and there. CIAO! 😀
